Weight Loss Management Q&A

What is weight loss management?

Weight loss management is a medically supervised program designed to help you maintain a healthy weight. It incorporates nutritional education, exercise guidance, and (if necessary) prescription medication to encourage natural weight loss.

If you’re overweight and can’t seem to achieve your goals through traditional diets or exercise, Dr. Suarez can help. Following an exam and a review of your medical history, he can develop a custom treatment plan that aligns with your needs.

What conditions can benefit from weight loss management?

At Covalent Health, Dr. Suarez uses weight loss management to treat various conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Arthritis
  • Edema
  • Varicose veins
  • Mobility issues

You might also benefit from weight loss management if you have a mental health disorder diagnosis like depression or anxiety.

What does weight loss management involve?

At Covalent Health, weight loss management is a six-month program that includes three components:

Nutritional counseling

The meals and snacks you eat affect your energy levels, metabolism, and ability to focus. If your diet consists of too much sugar, salt, or saturated fat, you’re more likely to feel lethargic and ill. A balanced diet that includes lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can help you feel your best and ensure you receive the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you need to thrive.

Exercise guidance

If you want to maintain a healthy weight, you need to stay physically active. That doesn’t mean you have to run marathons or lift weights, though. Dr. Suarez can develop an exercise program that aligns with your current level of physical fitness, even if that means walking on a treadmill or enrolling in water aerobics.

Prescription medication

If diet and exercise aren’t enough to encourage long-term weight loss, Dr. Suarez might recommend prescription medication. There are various weight loss drugs available. Some speed up your metabolism; others suppress your appetite.

The obesity, weight loss, and nutrition program at Covalent Health begins with an initial evaluation where Dr. Suarez conducts a physical (complete with biometrics), prescribes medications and supplements, develops your nutrition and exercise program, and orders any requisite lab testing.

Dr. Suarez follows up with you during weeks one, three, and five via telemedicine. During your initial follow up he reviews the results of your lab testing.

During the second month of the program, Dr. Suarez follows up again via telemedicine and re-orders any necessary lab testing.

In month 3 of the program, Dr. Suarez meets with you in-office to review the results of your lab testing. He follows up with you again, via telemedicine, at the four and a half-month and six-month marks.

The weight loss management program at Covalent Health also includes 3-4 unscheduled phone consultations with Dr. Suarez, a discount on supplements, and one sick telemedicine visit.

Who is a candidate for weight loss management?

Anyone who is overweight or obese can benefit from weight loss management. That’s especially true if you have an underlying medical condition that’s exacerbated by your weight, like diabetes or heart disease. Losing even just five to 10 pounds can reduce your risk of serious complications and significantly improve your quality of life.
